The Higginbotham Family of Kentucky and Texas



This website was created to honor the Higginbotham family that came to East Texas from Kentucky around 1900. It is dedicated to the memory of my parents,
Kitty Higginbotham Lowry and Judge Robert Lee Lowry.

Our family owes a special debt of gratitude to my maternal grandmother, Lela Mae Benton Higginbothan, and her eldest daughter, Dorothy Aline Higginbotham Crocker, who had the foresight to write down what they knew about our family and to identify and preserve family photos.



  • My maternal grandparents were: Robert Reno Higginbotham and Lela Mae Benton, pictured above with their first three children, from left to right; Jack Benton, born 1919, Frankie Lee, born 1917, and Dorothy Aline, born 1915. The photo below is of my mother, Kitty, born 1924, and her baby brother, Billy Robert, born 1926, in Sherman, Texas.

  • Robert Reno Higginbotham's parents were: Crofford (Crawford) Lonzo Higginbotham and Mattie Martha Page, of Clinton and Cumberland Counties in Kentucky.

  • Crofford Lonzo Higginbotham's parents were: Robert A. Higginbotham and Martha Ann Holsapple, of Russell and Clinton Counties in Kentucky.

  • Robert A. Higginbotham's parents were: Robert Higginbotham and Mary "Polly" Wilborn, of Greenbriar County, Virginia

  • Robert Higginbotham's parents were Oglesby (Oglesberry) Higginbotham (born about 1765) and Elizabeth Reed, probably born in Virginia.



  • Other families that I'm interested in are: Howell, Willson (Wilson), Boyd, Norred and Hopson

In 1937 Frankie Lee Higginbotham Collins gave birth to Carole June Collins. When Frankie Lee died in 1938, Carole came to live with her grandparents, Reno and Lela Higginbotham, where she was cherished as a daughter and sister. Below is a photo of my mother, Kitty, and her shadow, Carole, taken in the early 1940's
